Environmental Impact of Currently Marketed Sunscreens and Potential Human Impacts of Change in Sunscreen Usage

We are proud to be one of 15 reviewers of a report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. This report evaluates the state of science on the sources and inputs, fate, exposure, and effects of UV filters in aquatic environments, and the availability and applicability of data for conducting ecological risk assessments (ERA). It calls on the U.S. EPA to conduct an ERA of UV filters to characterize the possible risks to aquatic ecosystems, especially in environments with heavy recreational use, or where wastewater and urban runoff enter the water.

Report reviewers are chosen for their diverse perspective and technical expertise. The purpose of the independent review is to provide candid and critical comments that will assist the NASEM in making each published report as sound as possible and to ensure that it meets the institutional standards for quality, objectivity, evidence and responsiveness to the study charge.
